1) Your air conditioner is not working at all.
Having your AC go out on a 90-degree day is not fun, that’s for sure.
This is the most common issue when it comes to AC. It’s best when you can get your AC maintained and repaired before it gets to the point where it doesn’t work at all. Sometimes it can’t be helped, but having a regular air conditioning maintenance program schedule in place can prevent many issues.
Before you call an air conditioning repair service, check these three settings on your thermostat:
Make sure the thermostat is set to “Cool”.
Make sure the temperature it is set to is five degrees lower than the temperature of the room.
Check your electrical panel to be sure you do not have a tripped breaker.
2) The air conditioning is running, but there is little to no cool air coming out of your vents.
If your thermostat is set to a reasonable temperature and your home is still uncomfortably warm, your air conditioner is not doing its job correctly.
3) Your air conditioner is making strange noises.
If you’ve lived in your home for a few years, it’s likely you’re familiar with the typical noises your air conditioner makes as it goes through it’s cycles. When you hear noises that sound different from the normal routine, take note and you should call for repairs, even if it is cooling.
4) Your air conditioner smells funny.
If you are noticing unusual smells coming from your unit may indicate there is dirt, mold, or mildew inside your unit that is circulating contaminated air through your home. Bad smells are more than just a nuisance – they indicate a problem which should be dealt with right away to avoid health issues for your family.
5) Your air conditioner is short cycling.
As we said above, you should be familiar with the sounds and cycles of your AC unit. It is normal for your air conditioner to cycle on and off to maintain temperatures throughout your home. However, if you notice that it is turning on and off more frequently than usual even when the outside temperature is not extremely hot, it is possible sign of a problem. Short cycling puts additional stress on your AC, which could cause it to fail entirely if you fail to have it checked by a professional
6) Water is leaking in and around your unit.
While a small amount of water condensation is normal for an air conditioner, puddles and excessive water are an indication of something more serious. Your air conditioner has electrical parts which must be protected from water damage, so you should contact an HVAC repair person for help.
7) Your unit is icy or frosty.
Just as too much water is a problem, ice or frost in your air conditioner is a problem as well. Blocked or restricted airflow can lead to ice buildup, which can literally cause your unit to freeze.
